Deception
Here's the problem: every coach tells every pitcher how important it is to locate pitches. "You've gotta spot your pitches." Terms like command and control are thrown around as if they explain how to do that. And whenever an instructor talks about "hard in — soft away" he makes it sound as if
a) he knows what he's talking about and
b) that's all there is to know.
Unfortunately, those traditional buzz words fall far short of explaining anything at all. What's worse: that poor student pitcher is left with a total sense of failure — a belief that somehow he should know instinctively what the coach means by those catch phrases.

Confidence shattered

So the pitcher's confidence is shattered — not only because of his inability to spot those pitches, but because he has no clue where to spot them, or why. He stands alone on the mound looking home for the next sign, the next clue, knowing the game rests on his lonely shoulders.
